Wargaming Tradecraft asks for your Help

4.5 years ago, I created Wargaming Tradecraft after enjoying helping people out on a forum. Since then, with the help of a fantastic community, I've built it in to a site packed full of useful information for new and experienced artists alike.

However, the life of a 30-something computer administrator / radio engineer can get in the way and this past year certainly impacted the number of tutorials and articles I was able to write. Even then, site traffic remained strong and showed that people were still finding their answers within my pages.

(Big thanks to TheWife for putting together this video!)

You and I can bring Wargaming Tradecraft to the next level.

My vision is the ability to work full time on writing detailed tutorials for the public with regular work in progress updates showing other processes. To reach this point I've launched a campaign on Patreon, which works like Kickstarter.

Anyone can become a patron by pledging a certain amount of money to be automatically donated monthly until you choose to stop. I have a whole list of rewards depending on the amount, ranging from email support to group and one-on-one video training. I've even created a list of roughly 3 years worth of planned tutorials which a pledge level can add to and prioritize which will be written first. The monthly amount raised will dictate how committed to Wargaming Tradecraft I can afford to be.

Every dollar really does help.

I get a lot of hits - If everyone pledges a little, it adds up to a lot. Eventually, this would mean I could afford to buy things I wouldn't normally pick up. I wouldn't think twice about buying a Warjack or a Dreadnought to write a Tutorial on magnets. If I saw a cool new supply, I could easily pick it up and show you how it works.

A few things make this campaign and Wargaming Tradecraft stand out from others:
  • First and foremost, you're funding education that will be FREELY accessible by ANYONE.
    • I have no intention of charging for the website content in the future.
(If I ever do write books, they'll be organized compilations of stuff that will still be free online.)
  • I offer some real rewards as a thanks for helping to make this knowledge available.
  • I already have 4.5 years worth of tutorials that showcase the high quality product you're supporting.
  • Rather than just posting photos of finished miniatures or long descriptions without demonstrating what's being talked about, I focus on taking plenty of pictures and writing easy to follow tutorials.
  • Visual Index Pages to reference all articles.
    • Easily find the information you're after.
    • This prevents old content from becoming lost in archives.
    • These are linked along the top navigational bar of the site.
  • My content targets both beginners and experienced hobbyists with a commitment to providing a child safe environment.
    • I start with the very basics and ramp up to cool techniques.
  • I've been broadcasting video and audio live on Twitch as I work.

For full details, visit my Patreon page.
Even a dollar or two helps

Pictured below is the loot available for the two Closet Clean-out Giveaways. 3 people at each level will get to choose one of the available sets.

Most importantly, BE PART OF THE COMMUNITY. I'm not an invisible face behind the curtain. Comment, discuss and share your own thoughts. I've sometimes updated articles as readers offer ways to improve on them.

Also, peruse Wargaming Approved, an Amazon store I've put together that lists supplies I use to punch my projects through to the next level. (Note, I'm not actually selling these, it's basically just a list.) It appears that this may only work for Canadians, unfortunately... Amazon hasn't figured out a good way to work across borders.

Minor Article Updates

Traditionally, this is the time of year when people are offline and heading off to the respective events for the holidays. As such, I'm taking it easy today and just posting a brief list of some of the posts I've added minor updates to recently.

I know there are a lot of people who don't buy in to the whole "New Years Resolution" thing. But rather than going on every day, plodding along as usual, why not look forward to milestones as a time for change?

You can expect some big changes in the new year at Wargaming Tradecraft and I look forward to seeing you all then!

To those of you who are around and reading this, why not peruse some of these old, but no less relevant articles.

And with that, Happy Holidays to you and yours!

New Graphics

In the interest of improving the quality of Wargaming Tradecraft, I've been spending the last little while upgrading all my Index pages to a graphical layout. In addition to the Primary Indexes linked at the top of the site, I've also upgraded the Airbrush Index and the Dictionary.

As I work to make this site more professional, I want visitors to be able to quickly and easily find the information they're after. Visuals are one way to strongly communicate what it is you're reading about and grab attention fast. I've also changed links to "Google blue" due to studies that it's just what we're expecting and they get more clicks.

Let me show you what I'm talking about:

Detailed
These expand on all the areas of miniature hobbying and contain much more detail.
Modelling Steps
  • From purchase to finish, everything you need to know to get your minis ready to field.
  • BEGINNERS SHOULD START HERE.
Terrain & Bases

  • Can all be applied to miniature's bases as well as battlefield objects.
Techniques
  • Methods to add more detail and creativity to your miniatures.
  • Contains links to all the special tutorials I've written using paint and/or supplies.
Hobby Tips
  • Generic tips and tricks to improve your ability to hobby.
  • Covers staying organized, cleaning tools, taking pictures, lighting, etc.
Supplies
  • An alphabetical list of all the tools and supplies you might want to buy with links to more info on each.
  • Begins with the Essentials, then continues with all the extra, helpful and cool options.
Projects
  • Links to the awesome Army and Miniature Projects I've got on the go.
  • Includes Work in Progress breakdowns showing my process.
Musings
  • Articles I've written on different aspects of our hobby.
  • Includes getting started, art theory, saving money, tactics, patience and blogging.

In addition to this, I've improved my social media covers. You'll notice I left out the site name from these and that's because when you're on the page, it already overlays that for you. I want to capture the viewers attention and convey what Wargaming Tradecraft is about, showing off reasons why you should follow the things I do.

Facebook

Twitter
Would you believe that not only is that me in the right photo, but I took it myself?
YouTube
YouTube covers are awkward and giant because it has to be sized for viewers accessing the channel from a TV.
On computers, tablets and phones, it just uses a strip along the center.

State of Hordebloods

The topic came up in the Facebook Trollblood group to post pics of your finished models. So I did, which you can see above. I know, it's not a lot. Been a crazy time in the life of yours truly. But I stand firmly in the belief that if you hit a hobby road block - MARCH. Get your troops on the field and play some games. It's been a great motivator for me to keep working.

Speaking of working, Tradecraft Live is in full swing! It's been fun streaming while hobbying and getting a chance to chat with people at the same time. As you can see from past broadcasts, it's not super-exciting yet though it is a good time when there's people watching and we all end up chatting. Otherwise, I'm trying to talk to myself to increase the replay value. TheWife also points out that streaming is helping me hobby. I'm listening to music instead of watching TV/movies and I'm focusing on what I'm working on.

I'm in this real "hands on" mood with the Hordebloods at the moment. I know I'm mid-Champions on the painting front, but it feels good to revisit some units I don't think I spent enough time on. Fennblades have been give a real Forsaken undead look, I'm going to come back to the Warders too to strap on some carved wood totems, the skinner needs a nicer dagger and I'm having a bit of a time deciding exactly how I want my banshee's face and hair to look. A lot of this, you can watch live.

So yeah, just a quick update... remember to FOLLOW Tradecraft Live because then you'll get an eMail when I go live. Unfortunately, all this creativity is pulling me away from posting stuff to the website, but if you follow on Facebook you'll get more info on what I'm working on.

Due to plans last weekend and the upcoming one, I wasn't / won't be broadcasting, but don't worry, it will continue!

Weekly Update

Last Week at Wargaming Tradecraft

As you may have noticed, there haven't been many updates recently. I have been hobbying though, and getting back in to the groove... even hit my roughly 1 model per week, week and half that I was doing back before all the crazyness this last almost year now.

I did post a progress report on where things stood though, and just finished the UA for my Warlock Stonebearer unit. That post included a tutorial on how to freehand paint a feathered cloak, which awesomely showed up on TutoFig. (If you haven't checked that site out before, I highly recommend it)

Also, for the Privateer Players out there, I also wrote up a tutorial on how to control an Android mobile from your PC.

Last week meant another photography tutorial from me in the form of talking about backgrounds.

Soo, long story short, after pushing hard for a large work project, I've had to fight a broncial infection the last couple weeks. Laid me out, I was off work, zero energy, etc... Hence, the lack of posts. I'm going to try to get back at it, though reserves are used up pretty quick these days.

I've started adding some more photo tips, such as strength of lighting. I'll add more this week, leading up to building a light box next week.

Back-grounds back, alright! I know the background on my weekly updates has been missing lately. (to some) It looks like Google Blogger and Reader no longer support the basic HTML element for the background image, and now you have to use the "style" element... I guess it's the way things are going, just took me a bit to figure out the reason my titles were messed up.

I built a wall and you can too! Also, my next Krielstone Bearer Warlock is nearly complete.

In case you haven't been around, there was a delay as I had to move for a work promotion, but I'm finally back to work!

In the next week, posting will get better and I have a few already planned to hit in the next few days. In the mean time, enjoy a couple small updates and this weekly update!

Out of curiosity, anybody know what happened to Ninjabread?

Here's a Kickstarter that's piqued my interest. I don't actually know anything of the system, but the minis have some crazy designs. (No models yet, unfortunately.) Being someone who focuses on painting, I gotta say that these figures look like nothing else I've seen before and I'm pretty curious to see how they end up when they're finally modelled.

Dreamforge is also finally on the Kickstarter bandwagon. I've seen these creations slowly come together and they are mighty. Definitely worth your time to take a look at.

Not much of an update yet... but there is progress. Yesterday the Hordebloods were victorious as I finally got back to my FLGS for some WarmaHordes action... which helps to renew the bug to get painting again. As such, I cleaned my hobby area last night and it's about ready for some painting action again... so stay tuned.

Also, I've got something new in the works... give it a week or so tops... should prove to be a great step for the community.

If you haven't seen it yet, The Black Crusade is this years charity project using the same formula as the guys who've raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity over the last few years by auctioning off armies. Santa Cruz et al are taking a well earned break, but no worries because this is your way to help out today.

This year proves again to be a great project, so head on over!

Also, if you haven't seen it yet, Mike McVey has a Kickstarter going on for his Sedition Wars boardgame. The game itself looks pretty easy to learn, and has FANTASTIC miniatures that he's sculpted to go along with it. Definitely worth checking out.

Been under the weather this week, so while I did some painting, but between that and photoshopping the April Fools post, didn't get any WIP shots up. I did finish my first Warlock though, so I'll get that up in a few days... and a discussion on coping with failure.

In the meantime, I decided to catch up on going through some backlog, so there's some quality stuff in todays Weekly Update.
