Last Week at Wargaming Tradecraft

Getting a lot of great work done at the moment, and another successful weekend of hobbying.

I've reviewed using Blu-Stuff to mould my tauren faces. There was the Parents Guide to Wargaming, and a first look at my Krielstone Warlocks.

Hordebloods: Krielstone Warlocks WIP 1

So my Krielstone Bearer squad is going to be a Warlock squad with some orcs, an undead orc, and even a female undead using an Iron Kingdoms model TheWife won at the tourney she beat me in.

But by default, these are just a bunch of guys wielding axes, and we can't have that... oh no, we can't have that...

Many of us have fond memories of beginning this hobby as young kids. Our imaginations were fuelled by the excitement of controlling armies of small figures, which were then fuelled by loving parents and allowances. I'm sure some parents might look on these type of games with concern or at least confusion, since they can be harder to relate to, which is what I'd like to address in this post.

Overall, the hobby is a very positive one. The negative things I'll touch on here aren't meant as a critique of what it is wargames are about - just that parents deserve to know all the facts about what their kids are in to.

Moulding with Blu-Stuff

Having done some work now with Green Stuff, sculpting some rather tricky designs and scales, I wanted a way to easily recreate bits. So, I decided to try my hand at moulding. There've been a few sites that talked about using " Blu-Stuff " and the price was right, so I picked some up. It only cost about $10 + $2 shipping for 100g, pictured to the left. (Two small containers, maybe a cell phone sized amount)

Hordebloods WIP: Custom Heads

There's been a lack of content here lately, mostly because I've been working on the difficult task of sculpting - something I've never done before, especially when it comes to faces.. man faces are hard.

That on the left - definitely not a Tauren. Looks more like a gorilla. And the head's too big.

There's still more work to be done, but here's a small collection of some of the work I've been doing. with a description to go along.

Building Yourself a Cheap Tabletop

For a while now, I've been wanting to make some sort of war-table that'd allow TheWife and I (and any guests) to game. A buddy and I built a full size table before, but that doesn't exactly work in an apartment. I've been pondering and doing some mental planning recently after taking notice of how the FLGS extends their Magic tables for WarmaHordes. Last weekend I spent some time and built myself a wargaming field. In this post, I'm going to show you how. (And cheaply!)

After building it, TheWife liked it so much, she decided I needed to build a second one to keep out all the time. It fills our living room nicely, and will work great for board games, card games, puzzles, etc.

Last Week at Wargaming Tradecraft

The beginners guide to strategy and tactics is complete. This weekend I also not only got back into gaming since the holidays, but also built a tabletop that'll be featured on my blog tomorrow. Gaming definitely gets me back in the hobby mood though, so I think I'll be getting some more content on here soon.

Beginners Guide to Strategy and Tactics

via
In the last "Beginners Guide" article, I discussed list building. Now all that's fine and dandy, but what are you supposed to do once you step up to a table, ready to play a game? Today, I'll tell you.

This isn't an end-all-be-all of tactics, and it won't be a playbook you can print off to bring to games as a way to win in any scenario. I'm going to talk about some of the theory on strategy and tactics, then show some basic tactics when moving around the field and finish with a bunch of specific examples of plans you can try to pull off in your own games. I don't presume to know all there is about tactics; I never gamed in tournament circuits and usually stuck to playing against the same people, which often makes things predictable... but I hope that by the end, you'll have some idea of what to do on the table and how to come up with your own schemes.

Next week I'll look into some more specific examples of how these methods can play out in a battle. Feel free to send your own rough pictures in with descriptions.

If people suggest other plans of attack and defence, maybe I'll add them to this page and build it into a larger tactical database.

Happy New Year!

Not much goes on during holiday weeks, but I still read articles and have gathered some links (and some amusement) for all. Click on through.

The Food Machine project has begun promoting their charity drive though, so take a look at my post on it, and see the model I painted up.

I was interviewed recently by Loquacious for a really interesting series on art within the hobby.. take a look over at House of Paincakes.

Also, this Thursday is a doozie of a beginners guide, so hang in there.
